Frequently Asked Questions

What is a marine pilot?

A marine pilot is an experienced seaman responsible for guiding ships as they manoeuvre in and out of port.

He assists the captain with docking and undocking operations, and coordinates the actions of the various parties involved, such as tugs or boatmen.

Assigned to a specific maritime and port area, he/she masters its particularities, navigation conditions and possible dangers.

This experience and specialisation contribute to the safety of ships, their crews and port users, to the protection of the environment and to the fluidity of economic traffic in the port area, and therefore to its profitability.

How do you become a marine pilot?

All marine pilots are first and foremost merchant navy officers.

To become a pilot, you need to have spent around fifteen years at sea, on different types of ships and in various positions. You then have to pass a competitive examination specific to each pilot station, depending on the area in which you wish to work.

Preparing for this exam means learning about the area in question: its characteristics, special features and how to manoeuvre ships.

In the Seine, once they have passed the competitive examination, new pilots undergo five years' practical training alongside the pilots already working in the station.

Which ships are required to take a pilot on the Seine?

Pilotage on the Seine is compulsory for all vessels over 55m on the downstream section (from Le Havre to Caudebec) and over 45m on the upstream section (from Caudebec to Rouen).

It is also compulsory for all vessels carrying hydrocarbons or having passengers on board.

This requirement, laid down by both the French Transport Code and the Port of Rouen's regulations, ensures the safety of navigation, the environment and human life on the Seine.

I'm interested in a position as a mechanic, sailor, employed by the station. Who do I contact?

Please contact our HR department.

My ship is coming to the Seine for the first time. Who can I contact if I have questions?

If your arrival is confirmed by your agent, we will send you a “notice to masters” with all the necessary information. You can also ask your agent or the station's chief pilots via our contact form.
